Job title: Taxi Owner Driver, I have been driving a taxi in the city of Dublin for the past 8 years nowthe car that I use for my Taxi work is a Mercedes E250 diesel.
Key responsibilities: Well I do have a second driver on the taxi so my responsibility is to keep the car and him working and on the road at all times.
Taxi Information: There is 2,024 taxi in the city at the moment, but there is a move at the moment to increase this by a staggering 3,500 Taxis within the next ten years.
Pending Changes: A report has been published today 4th June 1998 on the Taxi Service in Dublin Ireland about the so called lack of Taxi's in the city, The current amount of taxi's servicing the city is 2,024. And they now want to increase this by a further 3,500 to 5,524 at the rate of 350 a year over the next 10 years, these will be sold at a fee of 15,000 each. And to top it all off
they want to then deregulate the taxi business after ten years, also they want to lift the restrictions on the on the privet hire car "The so called Hackney" Privet hire so they can display external signs. >>> Read on <<<

" WHY DO THEY NEED TO DISPLAY EXTERNAL SIGNS
IF THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED TO PLY FOR HIRE IN A PUBLIC PLACE"

" Inadequate bus service "

The reason that Dublin County Council... " The people charged with running the city ".... Are giving for all these drastic changes is that people are waiting for up to 90 minutes on taxi ranks and on the streets at busy times, They are not waiting 90 minutes, but people can be waiting anything from 20 minutes to an hour and the only reason for this is that they won't give the citizens and visitors to this city an other option of getting home besides walking or taking a Taxi and that is to provide a descent bus service after midnight, you may ask why a taxi driver who would traditionally see the bus service as computation would be asking for more buses well the answer is simply this the work is there now but it will not always be there if you but 3,500 more Taxis out there now they are there for good and when the present boom that this country is experiencing at the moment finishes how will any taxi driver be able to earn a living also the standard of car will drop and you will end up going back to the old days when the standard of taxi was not so good but the busses out there now to coupe with the present demand and if and when the Celtic tiger that we all here so mush about eventually gets old and dyes take them off again but don't expect the taxi drivers to be the fall guys because Dublin County Council won't for what ever reason arrange for Dublin bus to get the buses onto the streets when the are needed.

I have also been asked, why is it then that it is also difficult to get a taxi during the day the answer is this you cant get around the city with the traffic and they want to add an other 3.500 more cars to the problem if they worked on reducing the traffic jams regain the publics confidence in providing a decent public transport system you would not need anymore taxis on the streets because the ones that are there could get around faster You know it's so bad, I think the public think we are driving magic carpets and that we can fly over the traffic jams....You don't know how much I wish it was a magic carpet that I was driving..

Now i would like to say at this point that taxi drivers don't for one minute want to see people standing around waiting like this, we have been looking to get the buses and trains to work with us on busy times like Christmas and weekends for a long time but have had no luck in getting this done.
> > > " Once again I wonder why " < < <
But the real reason for people waiting on the streets of the city is that they have " No " other way of getting home after 11.30 at night and the real reason is that the city planners will not put a " FULL BUS SERVICE " on, AFTER 11.30 AT NIGHT...how do they expect a saloon car with seating capacity of four people to do the job of a bus service that will take up to 200.000 people into the city on a Friday night alone, and the same on a Saturday night... in what other developed city in the world, would the
public transport system stop go home finish it's service, just as the city is starting to come alive or indeed where in the world would the public transport system close down on a new years eve at 8.30 in the evening the busiest night of the year when there must have been an estimated 350.000 to 450.000 revellers in town to ring in the new year. This is what we as dedicated Taxi Drivers in Dublin have to put up with.... People like the council officials who can't arrange to get the buses
on the streets when they are needed and give the people the choice that they don't have, other then walk home or take a taxi, these are the same people who are toying around with my job without taking everything into account.

There are about 4,500 people employed in the Taxi industry in Dublin alone not taking into account the spin-off jobs like servicing, tyres, fuel, car sales and so on...I can say this much I will not be spending one more penny on this business and this is what will drive the standard of the taxi service and the cars that we use into the ground.
